FAQ

Isn’t time spent in nature a waste of time? Shouldn’t children be spending all or most of the day in academics in order to succeed and get ahead in school?

Research shows that children who spend regular time outdoors everyday excel academically, surpassing their peers who spend most of the day indoors in the classroom. Atchley and Strayer (2012) documented systematic changes in higher-level cognitive function associated with immersion in nature.

Is the cold weather going to make my child sick?

If dressed properly, certainly not. The colder months of winter are, rightly, a concern for parents, but fresh air is a boon for developing immune systems. A 1990 Swedish preschool study found children with fewer than 5 hours outside per week were sick more often than children who spend 6-9 hours outside per week. We work with parents to ensure that children stay dry and comfortable.

What kind of gear/clothes should I plan on sending with my child?

This will vary with each season in the program. We send all new students/parents a gear list and require that parents send along an extra dry set of clothes, no matter the season, in the event clothes become too dirty or wet for use.

Can I take a tour of the school?

Prospective students and their parents are invited to schedule a time to interview at the school, providing an opportunity for the student and parents to tour our school and forest area and to answer any questions. Following this interview, the student may be invited to come for a one-day visit to the school.

If I’m interested in enrolling, what kind of paperwork will I need to fill out?

If after the one-day visit, the student and parents wish to enroll the child and the school determines that this program is a match for the prospective student, the parents will receive a registration form, a photo release waiver, a Release and Indemnification Form, and a list of recommended gear/clothes for the season.
